Original Xbox Games Playable on Xbox 360

The folks at Xbox® are working hard to add more of your favorite games to this list, so check back often for the latest updates.

Note: A software emulator is required for each original Xbox game you play on your Xbox 360™ console. Please check back for more details as we approach the launch date.

Don't forget you need a HD to use this feature. I'm still upset that MS is offering a 360 with no HD option. This means it will once again go unused but for saved games and this time around backwards compatibility. Had they offered a lower sized drive in the cheaper model we might see more developers support the thing as it would be a system wide offering.

Actually, a very small number of games will indeed require it (Final Fantasy Online and perhaps Oblivion) but I don't think it'll get unused or go away. Current pre-order projections are indicating that 80% of the systems sold will have hard drives. For casual gamers, let them save $100 while the rest of us enjoy our machines to the fullest extent.

The initial one is 20 GB (about 2.5 times the size of the 8 GB one found in the original Xbox) but they have already mentioned that larger ones may be in the works. Since most content downloads and updates are pretty small, that should be fine for most people.

To put things in perspective, I have over 40 albums of music on my current Xbox HD along with save games for about 60 games and I've still got plenty of room on it.

The 360 can stream content from a Windows XP PC and Windows Media Center PC, so you've got extra network storage there, but only for music, video, and picture files--not game content.

It's removable. Here's another way to look at it:

A PS2 memory card is 8mb and costs $20. If you wanted 20GB of storage, you'd have to buy 2,500 of them for a total cost of $50,000. I think that's a bit more of a rip-off, don't you think?

Just because it's removable doesn't mean it has to cost 100$..c'on dude. I mean the GC cost 99 bucks. I hope they some how find a way to sticks another HDD in , just like they did wih the PS2. I have a 80 gig Maxtor HDD on my PS2 which cost me 30$ and functions pretty well. MS is just playing tricks so people that dont know crap go out and buy the core system so they can later buy all their expensive crap.

I just don't see it the same way, dude. I mean, we all know that Microsoft is losing something like $50-$75 for every system they sell, so you already know you're getting the machine below cost. How is that a ripoff? You can't just buy any old hard drive and slap it in (it's self-enclosed, has pre-installed software on it, and is removable unlike other hard drives out there except external USB ones) so what's the big deal?

Unless they turn a 360 into a TiVo, why do you need more than 20 GB?

GameSpot just did a cool side-by-side comparison of Xbox games playing on Xbox 360 to show the improved graphic effects (720p, full-screen anti-aliasing). They made a nifty split-screen video showing the visual differences with both machines running Halo 2. Check it out if you're curious.

In regards to the hard drive thing- keep in mind that it is a 2.5" laptop HDD using SATA II for the hot-swappability. Not an overly cheap HDD, especially considering it comes in a case custom made for the XBOX 360.
For example newegg sells a HDD with the same specs but WITHOUT SATA for $66.00.
