PS3s are already being used on American airports as airplane chocks, but the giant overpriced and overrated company has launched it's bloated flagship gaming product in Australia and Europe. The reaction Down Under was a collective yawn. Some stores were completely empty of customers at launch. How embarrassing is that?
European distributors, desperate to avoide complete humiliation, had to give away 46 inch TVs and free cab rides home to draw customers to the PS3. Unfortunately, customers were told they had to purchase a PS3 to get the TV.
The great sucking sound you hear are Sony Corp profits going down the ****hole along with Blu-Ray. With Blu-Ray success resting largely on the shoulders of a presumed installed base of Blu-Ray customers via the PS3, Sony has once again put forward a loser technology. Anybody remember Betamax vs. VHS? We know who won, and it wasn't Sony.
I'm having fun with all this cause I've never been a Sony fan. Their entire product line is over-rated and over-priced. They flat out got their asses kicked by Nintendo's Wii. I still can't find a Wii in an electronics store. I visited Gamestop yesterday and inquired and was told any Wiis that come in are gone within 2 hours. This is three months after Christmas!! Meanwhile, a huge stack of PS3s that had been around since before Christmas was gathering dust in the corner.
PS3 anybody?

The original Walkman was about the last good Sony product that I can remember.

I liked how MS handled a few of the events. At one store launching the PS3, they sent $480 worth of beer and asked, what would you do with $480? Wherever it was, $480 is the price difference between the PS3 and the 360. In France I think, they sent a boat down the river with signs saying "Xbox 360 loves you". And to think, MS has a sense of humor after all

I wouldn't say the PS3 flopped, though I do think the launches were pretty lackluster. It's not a bad piece of hardware...it's just too expensive to really compete with the competition right now.

It's more than that. The Xbox offers almost every title available for the PS3 and then some that you can't get for the PS3, like GRAW and GRAW2. The Wii offers interactive gaming for the couch potato set that doesn't want to depend on eye to thumb coordination and 15 year old male teenager reflexes.
So what does the PS3 offer that's unique? Absolutely nothing, unless Blu-Ray is important to you, and if it is, you're one of only 10 people on earth to whom it is important.

Not a fan of Blu-ray...or HD-DVD for that matter. I refuse to adopt before there is a standard. I'm not about to piss my money away on unproven and unpopular hardware formats.
I'm perfectly happy with my 360. It does everything I want (and then some), but I do think that eventually Sony will get their act together and provide something so unique that it'll sell lots of machines. Don't know what that is just yet, though.

First of all let me say I'm strictly a PC gamer these days I have no loyal stance to any of the "big 3". I do however think you'd be fools to just shrug off the Playstation 3 at this very point in time. Speaking to some friends who work in various game stores here in the UK the demand was there for the systems come launch date. No they didnt sell out on the first day and yes you could walk straight in on the day and buy one but that was thanks to the plentiful supply.
I heard an example one friend told me on Nintendo Wii's launch the store only had 2 units to sell, pretty easy to sell no matter how much or little the demand is. Xbox 360's launch they had 5 units again not to hard to shift considering it was also very close to Christmas at the time. Playstation 3 launch they had 14 units in store, Sony have done well to make sure everyone that must have it for launch date didnt go away empty handed.
Microsoft it has to be said also got owned on the promotions on the day yeah they sent out beer in the difference of price. Sony however was to busy giving out 46" HD ready LCD screens for FREE to people that participated in the event.
Doesnt take a genius to work out which out of free beer or free LCD screen got the media attention over here.
All my friends agree we wont know how the "next gen battle" is shaping up untill we get to christmas...wait and see.

Personally, I say you would be a fool if you didn't shrug off the current PS3. As it is, it is an overpriced hunk of junk with nothing for it worth buying that can't be bought for the 360 (with, more often than not, 1080p on the 360 side, yet not the PS3 side... good one Sony, you certainly do have 1080p, too bad your games don't offer that resolution). The online is a joke, though not to the extent of the Wii's online. The interface, while kinda pretty, was suited for a portable system... not a console.
At this point in time, the PS3 is a joke. And until they can offer superior exclusives or the like, it will continue to be so. Especially since it takes many, many years for a new data storage format to catch on. Only in the past 3 years or so have I stopped seeing VHS.

Like I say I dont have any favourites but I'll bring facts to the "ridiculous priced" PS3.
Over here in the UK a PS3 straight out the box with 60GB hard drive and Blu-ray drive
Total Cost :- £425
For something anywhere near close to that on Xbox 360 it costs the following
Xbox Premium package with 20GB Hard Drive - £280 + HD DVD drive - £100
Total Cost :- £380
When you look at it that way you see there really is'int that great devide, when you consider the PS3 is new to the market as well.

Do many people really need the HD-DVD drive though? That's Microsoft's advantage, they're not forcing it on you. If you need it, great, it's available, but if not, you don't have something you don't need.

Indeed, Sony is forcing upon the buyer an unproven, unnecessary technology that is used in all of, what, 5 games? 95% of their games are still dual-layer dvd size, and none of them go higher than even 23gb yet (the largest game is Resistance unless I miss my guess) last I checked.
Bluray may win its format war, but by the time that does occur there will probably be an even better format out, with a significantly increased storage size, making the effort ridiculous.

I could say it's more to do with making a standard with there consoles though which is always a good thing it's not about "force". People will make there minds up about what console they want no one is holding a gun to there head to buy it. Microsoft's "choice" on the other hand is there biggest headache there desperate revamps on there console is actions of an indecisive company. It almost feels like the old Sega days where they brought out there Mega-CD and 32X add ons. I wonder what people that got the core system feel now that there console is next to worthless with the "elite" package announced?.
Also with the announcement that the elite package is delayed in Europe that smell of stench is turning into the smell of oppertunity.
Say what you will...but I remember all the flack Sony got for there PS3 delays or when they revamped the PS2.
I just think some things need to work both ways.

Blu-ray isn't just a standard on Playstation; it's no coincidence they're pushing it from as many angles as they can. People that want PS3 are forced to pay the premium for Blu-ray as well, there's no option.
How is Microsoft's solution a headache? As far as I know the HD-DVD on it works like it should. Furthermore, people who bought the core system knew what they were buying. The Pro console is more than able to handle most players' needs, the Elite is for those that need HDMI and use the video service. I imagine Microsoft will sell more Pro consoles now that its price will drop.
