Microsoft's way is a headache to the game developer having to negotiate with different specs just like the PC. Consoles strength has always been the one spec for all which is'int the case with the Xbox 360 it'll cause problems with content in the future. I was reading a feature from EA about there FIFA games and the guy in charge of the project Andrew Wilson said the following.
Quote:
|
We ran out of space on the disc with current gen. Last year's FIFA had 26 leagues, 15 thousand players, kits, players, stadiums, audio and music, you just run out of space. The next gen discs have got more space so in the short term we will have much more commentary on our games
|
If they ran out of space on the DVD9 before now why will it be any different this time?. I guess you could always download the extra content...but oh wait you cant some of the users dont process a hard drive.
Microsoft's "choice" is superficial it's not about choice at all, Your going to NEED the premium's features in the next few years. Core users are going to be forced to shell out all over again sucks to be them.

How is it not about choice? It's not very different from PC, really. If you just want to play your average Xbox/Xbox 360 game, on a standard TV, get the Core or Premium. Now say you get a brand new TV with HDMI and the works, the Elite model is coming for you. And since you're up to an HD screen, grab the HD-DVD drive. Or say your favorite game comes out on HD, get the drive then too. You don't have to get what you don't need, that's all there is to it.
Naturally sooner or later Microsoft will have the HD-DVD drive built in. However, a fraction of their consumer base needs it now, so there's no reason to raise the price of their console for EVERYONE. You said in a few years, you'll need the premium features; by then the next Xbox may well be on the way, with those features standard.

Well all I'll put in is that the PS3 launch here was horrendous. Virtually all the feedback I've read from actual people that went to midnight launches etc is that there were more shop staff than customers. That's pretty tragic if you ask me.
Sure the PS3 will appeal to some people but I like so many others just see it as an overpriced piece of junk. If my PS2 is anything to go by (my own one won't read DVDs after 9 months + the internet is full of criticisms of the slimline PS2) then Sony's reputation leaves much to be desired.
Apart from that the PS3 is completely on the defensive. There isn't actually a single thing that makes it better than the Xbox, you know, something that actually sets it apart. Everything that's been said has been in the PS3's defence, in short it aint got nothin' on the Xbox.
How can you criticise a company for giving you choice? If you think you'll need the elite package then buy it instead of the budget one. However I'm sure there are plenty of people out there that are completely happy with having the budget version Xbox.

I know it's not popular to like the PS3 these days, but I don't think it's a bad system. Much of the backlash was due to management arrogance and questionable decisions at Sony. Plus, it's always fun to take a pot shot at the big guy, and Sony dominated the last generation 5 to 1 compared to Xbox and Gamecube.
Right now I don't think the PS3 has anything really going for it that sets it apart from the 360...except for Blu-ray. Since only early adopters care about the format, the high price isn't justified for the average user. In the long run including Blu-ray might pay off (large installed base for Sony pictures to release high-def DVDs) but I don't think we're at the point in games where such storage is mandatory, especially with compression technology being what it is. I mean, most PC games still ship on CDs since not every PC out in the public sphere is equipped with a DVD drive (but yeah, most NEW machines have a DVD drive standard).
Years from now this will likely play a more important role in gaming, and right now most people don't buy Sony's line of, "You need Blu-ray for next-gen gaming...we swear!" It's because of that drive you're paying $100-200 more for a PS3, and it's hurting sales. Why do you think Sony is yanking the PS2 Emotion chip from all future iterations? Because it'll save them lots of money (they'll use software emulation like the 360, for better or worse) and if they can reduce their losses, maybe they can cut the price of the console to spur sales.
Until the PS3 has a dozen quality exclusive titles, I won't even entertain the thought of buying one. After that I'll wait for the price to come down a few hundred bucks.

I liked how MS handled a few of the events. At one store launching the PS3, they sent $480 worth of beer and asked, what would you do with $480? Wherever it was, $480 is the price difference between the PS3 and the 360

The PS3 isn't that great. But then again, neither was the PS2 for the first few years. The 360 is better, it's also older. Sony is planning on keeping the PS3 until at least 2015. I would be flatly shocked if anyone could say the system sucks with proably around 5,000+ titles.

Wherever it was, $480 is the price difference between the PS3 and the 360. In France I think, they sent a boat down the river with signs saying "Xbox 360 loves you". And to think, MS has a sense of humor after all

This is why gaming journalists will never get any respect.
We recently ran an article that warned readers against misinterpreting opinion as facts because apparently, only loud-mouthed fanboys get any sort of attention in the realm of so-called video game journalism. Typically, the world of gaming news continues forward in much the same way it always has; we scan around, field the press releases in our inbox, try to find interesting scoops online, etc, etc, etc. But the recent trend, which apparently began with a new rash of PS3 hate - fueled entirely by jealousy - has assaulted the Internet, and we're already feeling the negative effects. You know, when narrow-minded idiots make certain inane proclamations in an ill-advised attempt to present their opinion as fact, everyone suffers. Now, they're actually trying to prove a point with completely irrelevant statistics!
Okay, here's a concept that everyone - everyone - needs to comprehend and accept. The Xbox 360 launched one year before the PlayStation 3. It has a larger user base. Depending on the source you use, Sony has sold between 18 and 20 million PS3s and Microsoft has sold between 26 and 28 million 360s. Now, we won't bother to show the obvious closing of the gap in the past two years; we'd rather stick to the point: when there are 8-10 million more of one particular console out there, the sales numbers for the corresponding software will reflect that gap. Therefore, this isn't anything like comparing the software sales between systems with equal user bases, and that instantly alters the numbers. This is fact #1. Here's fact #2: evidently, the only argument the Xbox loyalists have left revolves around sales numbers. And they're desperately trying to cling to it like a drowning fanboy clings to the life raft that's moments away from heading over the waterfall (God, if only).
