Diablo 2 save/transfer character help

hello my version for diablo 2 expan on my laptop is 1.12 and on my other computer it is 1.7 or 1.9 i believe i put my flashdrive in this pc copied my saved game installed the game on my other computer and transfered the data like how they have it when you create a new game but when i try to play my character on my other computer i cant play my character does that mean i have to have 1.12 on my other computer to be able to play my character?
